Tour #15

Seaside Secrets, Mansions and More - It's Newport for the Curious

A day in Newport is always filled with fantastic sights, panoramic vistas and the scent of the sea in each breeze.

From the downtown waterfront to Bellevue Avenue and an especially fascinating walking tour of the distinctive and historic “Point” district, this tour offers everyone the chance to experience something new about Newport!

Arriving at the Newport Visitors Information Center we have a quick tour of this one-stop informational hub. Here visitors to the City by the Sea purchase tickets to attractions and events, or pick up maps, brochures, and newspapers. This is also a RIPTA stop, with a coffee shop and comfortable waiting room.

Here we meet up with our “Historic Tours for Curious People” guide, who will conduct a one-mile, 90-minute, leisurely walking tour with us. This fascinating amble takes you to “The Point,” the oldest section of Newport. From rum distilleries to rope makers, gravestone carvers to slave traders, the Point was the center of commerce in the 1700’s. This part of your tour is a real eye opener!
At Easton’s Beach we’ll enjoy a specially prepared box lunch. Sit at a picnic table, listen to the ocean, or maybe ride the antique carousel!
Next, sit back, relax and enjoy a tour of scenic Ocean Drive.
Our coach then delivers us to Rosecliff, once the home of silver heiress, Theresa Fair Oelrichs. An audio tour tells the story of this “summer cottage.” Completed in 1902, it reportedly cost $2.5 million and became the setting for some of Newport's most lavish parties. Rosecliff has been featured in many well-known movies such as: The Great Gatsby, True Lies, and most recently, 27 Dresses.
On to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, housed in the historic Newport Casino. Here we can explore this extraordinary sports museum while experiencing the grandeur of a Victorian-era social club. The museum chronicles the entire history of the sport through fascinating galleries displaying memorabilia from the game’s greatest champions.

We head back across the bridge to “the mainland” after a full day.
